Yes, the climate crisis has reached us. We can now tangibly see all around us the effects the climate crisis, and ecological collapse as we enter into the sixth mass extinction that our world has seen. Recently, while visiting a friend, they asked me, "I have been fighting against climate change for so long. Now it's here and I don't know what to do? You see both myself and this friend had bonded over our fight against this potential ecological crisis.
We met at a time when both of us had hope, strong ideals, and oh so much energy. Together we founded a collective that aimed to bring communities together over skills such as rainwater harvesting and greywater treatment, bioremediation and herbalism, dancing and making art.
Together we fed people, built composting toilets, sang to plants, and talked about oppression. We planned for disasters. Let me repeat that We mapped out how our community was going to respond to the climate crisis. We planned and visioned for the fall best as we could predict. Yet, as myself and my friend sipped tea and talked on my recent visit, I couldn't help but think that this is not how the apocalypse was supposed to happen. It was supposed to happen quickly, with one swift blow knocking out capitalism for us.
We were supposed to be strong, able-bodied and able-minded. We were supposed to have access to land where we could grow gardens and build homes. We were supposed to be together, the whole community working together.
Interesting how I was confusing utopia for apocalypse because I was so desperate for the constraints of capitalism to fall away. Instead the apocalypse has looked like this: developing a chronic illness, struggling with my mental health, getting gentrified out of my home, loosing most of my community, feeling intense pain over the death of every whale and cedar - all the while having to pay rent and working a job. It has also looked like having a roof over my head most of the time , access to clean water, and food. Being able to travel and enjoy technology, even though many on the planet cannot say the same.
None of the plans that my friend and I made worked. None of our plans were even useful. So what did I answer my friend when asked what to do now? Well I said, I think we need to grieve. We need to grieve so hard that to future generations there is no doubt about the mistakes that have been made to get us here.
We need to shed all the tears, enough tears to wash away all of the bullshit.
We need to feel this pain, fully and deeply, so that we can learn from it and grow from it. We need to sit in the stillness of our trauma long enough to halt the patterns of abuse. Friend Reviews.
